Saharan stone tools

Roger Blench

The Sahara is very rich in types of stone tools of all periods. Many are found on the surface and are sold to dealers who bring them to Lagos, among other places. Many of the tools are not easy to identify; the lack of exact provenance and the fact that they are surface finds is very frustrating. Still, if we ignore these because they are not found in conventional excavations, we miss an important part of the repertoire. These pages show stone tools in private collections. I would be very pleased to receive evidence for parallels, possible dates and distributions. Thanks.
