Devon architecture

Roger Blench

Together with Willem Montaigne, I began a survey of Devon architecture, particularly churches, in 2005. The latest images are from January 2024. Devon churches are notable for the survival of painted rood screens and the unusual saints depicted there. We hope to visit all the churches where these are recorded. Regrettably, since Covid, many churches are locked without explanation, so this has become somewhat more difficult. Any comments or archives of photos where we have not yet been able to get access would be welcome. Needless to say, digital photography has moved on during the last two decades, so some of the earlier images need to be redone.

Church furniture explains the somewhat odd angles of the photos. These days I would be bolder about moving it to get a better shot. Plus I would bring a proper light into the church to improve the colours.
